; US SOCIAL FORUM II
; Another World Is Possible! Another US is Necessary!
; USSF2010.org

; What is the US Social Forum?

The US Social Forum (USSF) is not a conference, it is more than a networking bonanza, it is a movement building process, it is a space to come up with the peoples’ solutions to the economic and ecological crisis – The USSF is the next most important step in our struggle, this moment demands that we build a powerful multi-racial, multi-sectoral, inter-generational, diverse, inclusive, internationalist movement that transforms this country and changes history. We must declare what we want our world to look like and begin planning the path to get there. The USSF provides spaces to build relationships, learn from each other’s experiences and struggles, share our analysis of the problems our communities face, and align with our international brothers and sisters, continue to vision, and strategize how to reclaim our world.

; Why a 2nd US Social Forum?

The gathering in Atlanta in June 2007 had 12,000 people come together in the belief that “Another World Was Possible!” Movement forces from all over the country took advantage of the opportunity to celebrate, organize, teach, debate and otherwise contribute to a growing sense that “Another U.S. Was Necessary!” The USSF made it clear our need for greater convergence among progressives and the left in this country and to begin articulate our vision for “Another World.”

The US Social Forum provides this space--drawing participants from different regions, ethnicities, sectors and ages across the U.S. and its colonies. Community-based organizations, Indigenous nations, immigrants, independent workers organizations, unions, unemployed, youth, children, elders, queers, differently abled, international allies, academics, and advocacy organizations will be able to come together for dialogues, reflection and to define future strategies.

The purpose of the USSF is to effectively and affirmatively articulate the values and strategies of a growing and vibrant movement for justice in the United States. Those who build towards and participate in the USSF are no longer interested in simply stating what social justice movements “stand-against,” rather we see ourselves as part of new movements that reach beyond national borders, that practice democracy at all levels, and understand that neo-liberalism abroad and here in the US is not the solution. The USSF provides a first major step towards such articulation of what we stand for.

; Why Detroit?

To win nationally, we must win Detroit. The Midwest site of the USSF marks a fierce resistance movement for social, racial, gender, and economic justice. Detroit has the highest unemployment of any major city in the country—23.2% (March 2009)—with nearly one in four Detroiters unable to find work. Michigan has had the highest number of unemployed people in all 50 states for nearly four years. Thousands of living wage jobs have been permanently lost in the automotive industry and related sectors. It will take at least until 2025 for Michigan to recover from the economic collapse and social despair. What is happening in Detroit and in Michigan can happen all across the U.S.! Detroit is a harbinger for what we must do in our communities! As grassroots activists and organizers, we work to address the indignities against working families and low-income people, and protect our human right to the basic necessities of life.

; WSF to USSF--Globalizing the Resistance

A global movement is rising. The USSF is our opportunity to prepare and meet it! The World Social Forum (WSF) has become an important symbol of global movement convergence and the development of alternatives to the dominant paradigm. Over the past 9 years the WSF has gathered the world’s workers, peasant, youth, women, and oppressed peoples to construct a counter-vision to the economic and political elites of the World Economic Forum held in Davos, Switzerland. After gathering 100,000 people in Porte Alegre, Brazil in 2005, the International Council (IC) decided that in 2006 there would be regional social forums to culminate in a WSF in 2007. The IC delegated Grassroots Global Justice Alliance (GGJ) to help shepherd the US Social Forum process, stating that it was strategic to hold a gathering of peoples and movements within the “belly of the beast” that were against the ravages of globalization and neoliberal policies in the US and around the world. GGJ is an alliance that grew out of people-of-color-led grassroots groups who participated in the first WSF. These grassroots leaders initiated a process to create the first USSF National Planning Committee (NPC), and Atlanta was selected as the USSF host city. In early 2009, the NPC selected Detroit as the second host city for 2010.

; Call to Participate in the Building the Road to Detroit

We call those who fight for justice to converge and act. We call you to reflect on the potential of our position and the power of our connections. Though movement leaders have built organizations that push forward an integrated, multi-issue, multiracial strategy, we have yet to build our movement on a scale relative to our sisters and brothers in the Global South. The USSF II offers the opportunity to continue to gather and unify these growing forces. We must seize this moment and advance our collective work to build grassroots leadership, develop collective vision, and formulate strategies that keep a strong movement growing. There are many ways to get involved, your organization can join the National Planning Committee, you can join the working groups or start building regional and local committees to ensure a massive and diverse participation in Detroit, June 22-26, 2010.
* I added a couple of sentences above, as promised (sort of -- is 1 a.m. still Friday?), to solicit testimonials or enthusiastic comments from the last social forum.
* I also added the Stories page to the links.
* Then I noticed that you had already made it into a (very attractive) word document. I did a little tightening up of the document without cutting the meaning (which wasn't easy) -- except I did think one sentence about when Detroit will recover was debatable enough to be deleted.
* Thanks to whoever spiffed up the format of my comments.
* Nicely done. It seems long, but for people who already participated, they might well want all this information.
* Jamie wanted us to know that the resources committee is planning a fund-raising appeal. He wanted to know if they know about this Save the Date communication.
* Sylvia wasn't on the call, when I brought this up, but I expressed the feeling is that this is probably a separate communication. No one added to that opinion, but Sylvia it's in your hands.
* Not sure how we connect to resources committee to make sure we know what each other are doing on the long term. Is there anyone who belongs to both groups who can coordinate with them?
Nancy Brighamhttp://wiki.ussocialforum.net/index.php?title=Save_the_Date&diff=1297Save the Date2009-06-06T06:22:35Z
Nancy Brigham: /* Comment from Nancy: */

Doc looks great but there was no room for announcing the wiki for comment - I managed to get a little space by taking out the phrase "It will take at least until 2025 for Michigan to recover from the economic collapse and social despair." (I don't see any way we're going to recover in 2025 or ever -- people, jobs and money are leaving in droves for good -- we'll have to totally rebuild.) ; US SOCIAL FORUM II
; Another World Is Possible!

The USSF provides a first major step towards such articulation of what we stand for.

;Why Detroit?

As grassroots activists and organizers, we work to address the indignities against working families and low-income people, and protect our human right to the basic necessities of life.

;WSF to USSF--Globalizing the Resistance

In early 2009, the NPC selected Detroit as the second host city for 2010.

;Call to Participate in the Building the Road to Detroit

Comment from Nancy:
* Nicely done.
* It seems long, but for people who already participated, they might well want all this information.
* I hope we'll add something, as we discussed, that will ask for testimonials or enthusiastic comments from the last social forum
and stories about how it made a difference, so we can put such comments on the web site.
As we discussed, such personal and real experiences make the forum's relevance come alive.
* I'd be happy to draft something on that.
But first I want to ask the Tech Committee if we can or should make a web page with a function
where people can input their experiences and outcomes.
Then it would be automatically input into a database that we can all work from.
Nancy Brighamhttp://wiki.ussocialforum.net/index.php?title=Communications-Media_Working_Group&diff=1185Communications-Media Working Group2009-06-02T04:13:06Z
Nancy Brigham:

Meeting Notes - Communications Working Group Conference Call, May 22,2009
Facilitator - Reg McGhee/ Bill Bryce
Note taker - Reg McGhee

Agenda: Check in
Charles Lyncher (ICT), Ariel Dorctury (Media Equity Collaborative), Bill Bryce (Jobs With Justice - Detroit), Nancy Brigham (Technology WG), Josue Guillen, (NPC- Praxis Project), Sylvia Orduno (NPC - MWRO), Damon Hartley (video producer), Frank Joyce (Mich. Coalition for Human Rights), Lou Novak (Green Party - Michigan), Joel McKinney (Detroit), Reg McGhee (Jobs With Justice - Detroit),

**"Save The Date" e-mail
Currently, a "Save the Date" draft is being worked on by (?) to be sent to about 6,000 e-mail addresses from the 2007 Atlanta SF. It was suggested and agreed that it would be posted on the wiki for a one-week review. Final comments will be complied and given a shorter review period before sending it out. It was suggested that this piece would be a good practice piece for a group revision process. The group agreed that a generic e-mail account should be set up to handle responses and questions. The idea is to have something in place before the June 22 kickoff.

**USSF Logo
Cynitra (Detroit Comm. WG) asked by previous email if a logo was being developed. It was explained that initially in 2007 a logo was created with little feedback due to lack of organization. There was some discussion at the international level about a logo with a common theme for all Social Forums. Nationally, in 2007, the Design Action Group Collective in Oakland, CA, designed a logo for free that was used in Atlanta.

There was good discussion about the use of a contest to generate interest and promote interaction. However, issues were raised with coordinating such activity, and insuring that it reflects the SF's intent and messages, and gives a "Detroit flavor." Trying to get something done by or near June 22 was also a concern. It was noted that the Design Action Group was also interested and available to help again, and that all graphics from 07 are available.

It was agreed that a Design Working Group or subcommittee of the Comm. WG should be put together to address this. And it was agreed to bring this before the Detroit LOC for more input.

**Website
Another good and full discussion on the need for a website (Wbs). It was raised that the Wbs would serve many purposes. Content and functionality are key. All working groups/committees should be contacted/involved to insure that Wbs serves their needs. It was noted that an initial, basic Wbs could be developed for the 6/22 kickoff and it could be added to as we go on.

It could be a place to capture interest (sign-ups) and donations. It could be a way to get people involved at the local level. The Wbs should have pictures and graphics. It should certainly tell stories - success stories about struggle and victories. It was raised that we needed stories to reflect the struggles that people are facing, like water rights, rust belt and Detroit issues.
It was suggested that one source for success stories was "Sociologists Without Borders." (contact info?)

The Comm. WG and the Wbs should solicit stories and begin to make connections with groups and individuals. Perhaps a "My USSF" that could be customized to each person (similar to that used in the Obama campaign). It could have testimonials as a way of building interest in the SF 2010. It should take advantage of existing sites like Flickr, Facebook, and YouTube to upload or connect to. It was raised that the process was key in this important task.

There is a DVD in production from Atlanta and that an email list of some 6000 people is available. It was also noted that the NPC worked hard on building a critical mass and base building, and communication of core messages. That there was still time and room to broaden the outreach.

It was agreed that a subcommittee should address the Wbs. Nancy, Josue, Charles, Sylvia and Joel agreed to work on this. It was noted that the Detroit LOC needed to craft a "story" for the wider audience and that this would be raised at the next Detroit LOC. Labor Day was suggested as one target date for more robust content from Detroit. It was raised that this story could address the "Road from Atlanta to Detroit." More press and community stories also need to be incorporated onto the Wbs and that we should be looking for more content on the
Wbs after Labor Day.

Correction from Nancy:
I found my notes on this and I'm pretty sure the volunteers for the committee also include Lou Novac and Carlos.
Jammie might also have volunteered.
We need to get email addresses to confirm this!
From the Tech/communications committee we have Alfredo of MayFirst and Ross.
Since I can't seem to clear out my other work,
I have to decline chairing the committee, though I'll still devote a lot to it and will be the liaison with Communications/Media group.
Alfredo has the time and agreed to chair it, with the condition that there be real participation,
especially from the communications group.
So who we have right now, subject to confirmation, is:
Alfredo, Nancy, Ross, Josue, Charles, Sylvia, Joel, Lou Novac, Carlos, and Jammie -- please forgive misspellings.

**Blog Request from Applied Research Center (ARC)
Gina Acebo from ARC has offered a spot on their website: www.arc.org
for the SF to blog about 2010. It was agreed that this was a good opportunity but we did not need to address it immediately. We should communicate back to her that we are interested and put it on the agenda for the Communications WG to handle as we develop more material and the other on-going needs.

**Allied Media Conference
The annual Allied Media Conference, a large gathering of people and groups involved in alternative media and struggle, will be meeting in Detroit from July 16-19. Many of these people are the kind of folks we want to attract to USSF 2010. It was noted that the USSF NPC was a sponsor and will have a large presence there. The Woman's' WG will have a caucus, the Center for Media Justice will have people there, the USSF will have a caucus there. It was generally agreed that the Communications WG should try to make it and get involved in some way.

**Due to the length of time taken on the above items, other medium term items like overall media strategy and key message integration were postponed to future meetings/calls.

**Next meeting
It was agreed that the next Communications Working Group conference call would take place on Wednesday, June 3, 6pm, EST. The same call-in number and access numbers would be used.
Nancy Brighamhttp://wiki.ussocialforum.net/index.php?title=Save_the_Date&diff=1184Save the Date2009-06-02T04:06:29Z
Nancy Brigham:

;US SOCIAL FORUM II
;Another World Is Possible! Another US is Necessary!

;What is the US Social Forum?

The US Social Forum (USSF) is not a conference, it is more than a networking bonanza, it is a movement building process, it is a space to come up with the peoples’ solutions to the economic and ecological crisis – The USSF is the next most important step in our struggle, this moment demands that we build a powerful multi-racial, multi-sectoral, inter-generational, diverse, inclusive, internationalist movement that transforms this country and changes history. We must declare what we want our world to look like and begin planning the path to get there. The USSF provides spaces to build relationships, learn from each other’s experiences and struggles, share our analysis of the problems our communities face, and align with our international brothers and sisters, continue to vision, and strategize how to reclaim our world.

;Why a 2nd US Social Forum?

I found my notes on this and I believe the volunteers for the committee also include Lou Novac and Carlos, and Jammie might also have volunteered. We need to get email addresses to confirm this!
From the Tech/communications committee we have Alfredo of MayFirst and Ross. Since I can't seem to clear out my other work, I have to decline chairing the committee, though I'll still devote a lot to it and will be the liaison with Communications/Media group. Alfredo has the time and agreed to chair it, with the condition that there be real participation, especially from the communications group.
So who we have right now, subject to confirmation, is:
Alfredo, Nancy, Ross, Josue, Charles, Sylvia, Joel, Lou Novac, Carlos, and Jammie -- please forgive misspellings.
for the SF to blog about 2010.

It was agreed that the next Communications Working Group conference call would take place on Wednesday, June 3, 6pm, EST.

Nancy Brighamhttp://wiki.ussocialforum.net/index.php?title=Meetings_and_Notes&diff=995Meetings and Notes2009-05-19T18:25:20Z
Nancy Brigham: /* LOC and Anchors */

About the USSF 2010 Technology Working Group
The Technology Working Group's purpose is to provide high level coordination, prioritizing, and decision making about the information and communications technology used in organizing the United States Social Forum in 2010. We welcome all members, regardless of technical skill or experience, to participate.

We recognize that technology development is not just one aspect or one part of organizing for the social forum, but is integrated into almost every working group, both nationally and locally. Our approach is work collaboratively with all other working groups on developing the technology they need, assign technically skilled volunteers to each of the working groups, and help coordinate the work of the tech volunteers through the forum.

We operate according to the technology principles agreed to at the March 2009 NPC meeting in Detroit.
Thanks for the support on getting this wiki running well! I remember you from 2007 - and using AboutUs :).

Peace and Blessings Mark,

I just attended a planning meeting for the Midwest Social Forum. I proposed that they plug into our Wiki to further communication and collaborations. In my mind I saw the Detroit Local Organizing Committee Wiki and the NPC both utilizing the Wiki, and thought that it would be a logical extension to include the Midwest Social Forum instead of them creating something separate. How do you feel about including a Navigational link for the Midwest Social Forum? I am willing to take responsibility for setting up their pages. Is there a way to provide a link on the US map on the home page for them as well?

The Wiki is an excellent organizing tool. I would like to see the Detroit Local utilize the Wiki more, maybe we can set up mini trainings or online trainings (they are on the phone as someone goes over how to use the site).

Please consider. I will check back soon.

Sincerely,
Oya

Hi Mark,

Sorry I couldn't get it together to respond before our meeting today. But yes, let's definitely get together.

I'm very happy to see you like to do wiki training and are experienced with it, since our local committee was crying for such training. I have used wikis but am not expert enough to do training. You and Oya both seem to have the right expertise.

Also, I'm not sure how we're structuring our wiki communications, like on this page for example.

In any case, I put it on the agenda for today's conference call with the Tech committee.
