Discussion around Committee Structure:

o Read aloud the Committee Structure handout

  • Section by Section

Discussion around “Chairs” section of handout

o ** Spell out LGBT as Lesbian Gay Bi-Sexual and Transgender

o ** Request a change to “people with disabilities” instead of “disabled people”

o The Committees should take into account authentic leadership not putting someone in place just because they are from an oppressed community. People who are socially active and have proven themselves in their community.

Discussion around “Committee” section of handout

o Can we get an update somewhere besides the wiki page?

  • We will provide meeting minutes in a binder located at MWRO
  • This will be updated by Committee Chairs and put in the binder

o Some of the Committees are still in the infancy stages, how do we switch up leadership once we get on a roll?

  • 4 month rotation is optional but is important for cultivation of leadership

Discussion around “Facilitation” section of handout

o Can some of the Committees use the conference phone line that was formerly used for USSF meetings?

  • **EMEAC will get back to the group about access to this number **

Discussion around “Accountability” section of handout

o If we continue to organize in the same way we will continue to get the same result

o We are trying to get people from the bottom up to get involved - we’ve gotta think differently

o **Instead of having a “social and written contract” change to “Discussion that includes deciding a purpose and communication about leadership”**

Discussion around National Working Groups and Local Committees (Information not included on handout but will be added) “

o There is not a full understanding of how the Local Committees should work with the Working Groups (WG)

  • Want to try and coordinate events where we fundraise locally so that when Committees need money we’ll have it here

Additional Ideas for Committee Structure:

o Pool of volunteers available to do work for all Committees

o Colleges, universities, students can be tapped for involvement

o Should be kept up to Committee leadership to ensure people stick to their obligations

Discussion around Detroit Local Organizing Committee (D-LOC) Structure

o Read aloud the D-LOC Structure handout

  • Section by Section

Discussion around “Purpose” section of handout

o This is essentially a Steering Committee and no longer a Local Organizing Committee

o We still want a place where progressive discussions can occur, people can bond, and get to know one another. We want D-LOC to remain translucent and not become streamlined.

  • These will still occur but in different avenues, this D-LOC handout is just structuring these meetings so that work happens
  • We can we create other functions / meetings where we all can come together

o D-LOC will continue to remain open to all, be inclusive, and non-hierarchical meanwhile maintaining structure so that work gets done

Discussion around “Members” and “Structure” section of handout

o **Each meeting will have an agenda and be provided to members in advance – a week in advance**

o **Add a piece in the document for how to recognize Committees, stipulate how Committees are formed**

  • Submitting a Purpose from a Committee could be a way of recognizing Committees
  • The DLOC is not a sanctioning / permission giving Committee, we can just recognize Committees

Additional Ideas for D-LOC Structure

o We need several ways to communicate besides e-mail or texting

o Need an organizational chart that continues to be refined

Additional Items

o Immigration and US Latino American Relations Committee created

o Entertainment Commission

  • Oya met with them and they are on board
  • Just let them know what we want and they’ll be working with the Culture Committee

o 2,000 USSF cards available at MWRO, 4th floor, 23 E Adams @ Woodward
