Review/Updates from last call Maria: Student Labor Action Project had a gathering Various student national organizations come together every semester and Carlos did a presentation on the USSF and how we are engaging students. United States Students Association joined the process from the gathering Youth Working Group that does not have a group chairing it yet, it would be great if Maria can follow-up with the chairs from Atlanta USSF. Student Labor Action Project may be open to co-chairing the working group.

B in Chicago: Gathering in August with 50 people there. Next gathering is next Tuesday and they will get the word out. http://roadtodetroit.blogspot.com/

Darryl: Is getting in touch with Maureen and Marian about coming to Detroit soon. If we can give him a list of some groups he can do outreach from where he is.

Feedback on USSF designs by Design Action Collective

Will work on posting the designs on the wiki Mallory: Will the design chosen be incorporated into the website/wiki/etc? Cindy: Once feedback from Outreach group, NPC, and DLOC we can give it back to the Design Action Collective who will then come up with the final look for the Social Forum The hope is that once we come up with a design it's something we can brand on multiple levels

Survery of 5 looks: Brigid - 2 Maria - 5 Darryl - 3 Carlos - 5, 6 could be good Rama - 3 Ahmina - 2 Cindy - 2, 3 (If 5 had people in it) Jake: 2, 4 Ricardo - no vote, don’t have images in front of him Mallory, 5 Tammy - 2,3

Option A/pg 2 - 5 votes: • No real people (option B/pg 3 has real people) • Like the graphic look • The little plant is something that is not easily translatable to other things • Put the root that is on B and bring it up • What about the symbol being the woman holding a megaphone? • Like it because it looks very festive • Font - like this font better than that of pg. 3, it has that crackled/painted look • Color - People generally like • Too many birds • The young black woman on the left, if she could be looking up. • More definition of the people on the poster • Posters are too blank • Incorporate the spanish from pg3 (it's also misspelled) • Posters were done in English and Spanish last time • "Another World Is Possible" on the top is too tight on the first line

Option B/pg 3 - 4 votes: • Like the font on Option A/pg2 than on this option • Plant is too prominent • Don't like the shadow in the back also coming out of the rubble what do we want? maybe other images • A little busy, but if we change it up a bit could be okay

Option D/pg 5 – 4 votes: • Font is crisp • Really likes the black, white, gray color • Incorporate people? • Bring the people from pg. 4 onto pg. 5 (pics from Atlanta Social Forum) • Too deary, too much like a cemetary • crack looks more like a road, like imagery of the road, but it's not headed to Detroit - benefit is that it's cleaner but too depressing • Add people caring for the plant, maybe planting it? • None of the roads come or go to Detroit • Keep the top of the flyer the same, but perhaps change the bottom half • Use the people from pg. 3 • Too scary version of Detroit not a good image

Could the leaf be the new logo for the USSF?

Final vote: A/2 - Brigid, Ahmina, Jake, Mallory, Ricardo, Carlos, Rama, Maria, Cindy, Tammy, Darryl

  • A lot of people voted this contingent upon the changes we discussed

B/3 - Darryl D/5 - ?

Tammy will send our feedback to the Communication Working Group We'll try and circle back to this on the next call

Volunteer for poster/flyer/postcard text • Can we get a volunteer for someone to use existing poster/flyer/postcard text and just tweak it a bit • These documents are on the website • B will do • Ahmina will send B the Detroit documents they've created

Schedule additional call in September (before our October 14th normal monthly call) • We will be sent applications for field organizer position this Saturday • Good idea if we can all read the applications and then have a discussion around the different applications because Outreach Working Group and PMA will be working closely with the field organizer • Wed, September 16th 10PST, 1EST will be our next call to discuss field organizer applications • Please provide this information to us if you are unable to join the call o What you thought of the applicants? o Top picks o Questions that should be asked of them in interview o Any concerns • WG co-chairs of PMA and Outreach should be intricately involved in the decision making • If you know potential candidates please let them know, there's still time to submit an application (before this Saturday!)

USSF consulta process drafted by the Program & Culture Working Group • Themes and frame for the Social Forum which translates into the tracks • How is it that people are talking about the issues • The program working group has taken the lead on a collaborative effort on behalf of the NPC and DLOC on how people can be involved in the schematics of the social forum • How can we use this process to help build up our database • We want to figure out where it is that people are involved • Timeline for consulta process: make a call for submits in October, close by December • Consulta Subgroup: o Work with Cindy and think through the Outreach plan for the consulta o Sectors, regions, community groups and ensure that we have a diverse group that can provide feedback o Also work on providing feedback on the survey itself o Be on at least one communication with the Program and Tech WG • Cindy, Rama, and B volunteered as the Outreach WG sub-group on the consulta

Calendaring - G20 Actions • Present for the G20 actions in Pittsburgh: Darryl Jordan, Brigid Flaherty, Cindy Weisner, Tammy Bang Luu • Offline brainstorm various events where they can advertise for USSF • Ensure they have outreach materials for G20 event • Everyone send Tammy what events you're going to so you can split them up and make sure USSF gets a plug • Ahmina and Darryl will coordinate on getting USSF postcards to Pittsburgh (union printer closed down; looking for a new shop to make postcards, flyers)

Outreach Working Group Listserve • It's up and going... • Everyone is on the listserve • If you're not on e-mail Tammy Luu, Tammy@thestrategycenter.org
