USSF Communications and Media

"Let’s make a network of communication among all our struggles and resistances. An intercontinental network of alternative communication against neoliberalism… (and) for humanity. This intercontinental network of alternative communication will weave the channels so that words may travel all the roads that resist… (It) will be the medium by which distinct resistances communicate with one another. This intercontinental network of alternative communication is not an organizing structure, nor has a central head or decision maker, nor does it have a central command or hierarchies. We are the network, all of us who speak and listen." Subcomandante Marcos

We view our work with the USSF communications and media team as responding to and helping build a movement for social justice and an alternative, progressive communications system in the United States that is open, decentralized and radically democratic. By highlighting and elevating the voices of the exploited, excluded, hopeless, underpaid, overworked and unemployed we seek to both expand the belief and realization of another world being possible and necessary and to promote just, sustainable and healthy solutions to our current political, economic and cultural crisis. The USSF convergence in Detroit is an opportunity to expand who we are and to work with other forces such as the Allied Media Conference and local community activists to build this alternative communications infrastructure. We have created the USSF Writer’s Networks and Peoples’ Media Center to enable this transformation and encourage all “Media Makers” to join us in this struggle before, during and after the USSF.

(place final draft of pmc principles here instead) First and foremost we consider all individuals to be Media Makers! We are all helping to build a progressive communications network both in the US and the globe. And, we all embrace an open and decentralized approach to constructing this network.

Additionally, we work to broaden participation in the USSF, particularly among groups most excluded from mainstream politics, expand networks among diverse media practitioners in a collaborative effort to disseminate information and stories about the USSF, inform members and the public about the US Social Forum and the larger World Social Forum process, and increase awareness and understandings of the global movement of which the USSF is part.

Peoples’ Media Center is located on the second floor of Cobo Hall in the West wing. Open to everyone for meetings, trainings, and work spaces daily from 6 am to 2 am.
