Gender Justice Working Group Conference Calls 5/19/10

People's Movement Assembly Planning Conference Call

On the call - Rose Brewer, Corinna Yazbek, Nora Dye, Katie (last name), Jacqui Patterson, Mayowa Obasaju

ACTION ITEMS

review and editing of proposed structure by GJWG members and especially PMA co-sponsors who weren't on the call. DEADLINE: before next Wednesday identify small group facilitators flesh out agenda and create list of materials needed construction of process for enabling other people to weigh in (online and at forum)

NEXT CALL is Wednesday May 26th at 8 pm (before the larger GJWG call)

BACKGROUND: The Gender Justice PMA is being sponsored by the CLPP program at Hampshire College, Just Associates, Ella's Daughters, and Women of Color United. It will take place during one of the 4 hour PMA blocks in the afternoons of the Forum

Rose is in Detroit at the OC/NPC meeting, attending a PMA WG meeting on Thursday 5/20

There will be other PMA's going on simultaneously

Goal of call: figure out what this PMA is going to look like, and who will facilitate

Missing Just Associates and Ella's Daughters on the call.

PMA Process - one component is the PMA's at the USSF. there have been PMAs all over the place that have come up with resolutions that will be proposed to the national PMA on the final day of the USSF.

Out of the PMA at the USSF, we will generate resolutions.

GOALS of the PMA:

  • Maximize alliance building
  • Create concrete, actionable proposals

(other things can be added)

Things to keep in mind - how is the process open enough to enable people to weigh in, but also structured?

STRUCTURE:

1. Introduction - setting the political context using language from the proposal.

2. small group question time - what would a world with gender justice look like? what concrete changes need to happen to achieve gender justice? (need sub questions to facilitate answering these questions)

3. small group report backs to larger group

4. consensus on top issues - what are the issues we want to create resolutions around?

5. break out around issues to create proposals - each issue has a group of people dedicated to creating the proposal

6. return to large group for consensus on proposals

FOR CONSIDERATION: is there a way to engage people who can't be there? maybe creating a google form asking the same questions we're asking in the small groups to collect answers from people online.

how do we avoid getting a skewed response? how do we engage the voices of people who are most affected by injustice? having something at the GJ tent to collect those answers as well.

also we need to figure out how to construct the PMA to get those voices heard.

can we get volunteers to walk around asking the questions? also we could have a page in the GJ program book that could be torn out and turned in.

QUESTION - how do we engage people in Detroit with this PMA?

we'll continue doing the PMA call before the GJWG call.

GJWG CALL NOTES

AGENDA:

PMA Structure and content of the GJ tent safe spaces and the queer liberation group scholarship process report on the status of the GJWG to the NPC/OC

On the call - Rose Brewer, Corinna Yazbek, Nora Dye, Katie (last name), Jacqui Patterson, Mayowa Obasaju, Margaret, Marina

TENT - what do we want there?

50 chairs and 5 tables. outside at the USSF Village.

Staffing - we want to have at least one person there the whole time. Call to organizations to bring materials! Some kind of sign or banner that is gender justice related.

events! there will also be a red tent? (there was one at the last USSF, and it was awesome.) they may or may not be coming to this USSF.

what will be in our tent? place for people to answer the PMA questions. There will be electricity, Rose filled out the survey indicating we needed outlets.

White boards for people to post info about self-organized workshops, and also to use during the self-organized workshops.

Maybe having video/film showing? Can we do this if we don't have enough logistics? (to be continued)

Marina will summarize the list of things we talked about and supplies needed.

SAFE SPACES in conjunction with the queer liberation group

There was going to be a training at the NPC meeting but not enough time, but there will be info passed out.

There was a document that went out around security. There is a MOU about how they're going to carry that out. asked the GJWG to weigh in on that. Nora and Rose will send it out to the list once we've made edits.

how are bathrooms being identified? need to find out. also need to work on having signs in the gendered bathrooms about not policing that space.

Nora gave the bathroom map to someone (Tapeka? Sylvia?) with 25% or so of the bathrooms marked as All Gender bathrooms at the last OC meeting. Jacqui and Rose will follow up with the logistics committee and Akudo to figure this out.

SCHOLARSHIPS

people need to front the money. Susannah Bartlow will sign off on it, and it will go to the organization that's managing the money and they will get reimbursed. The USSF will reimburse within 3-6 weeks.

The deadline will be May 31. There is a committee of people - so far, Mayowa and Marina.

Marina will finish the program book after the actual schedule comes out. There may be other info that goes into it (about being an ally etc)

BLOGS

We have been asked to do blog posts on feministing. Mayowa, Nora (next week), Corinna, Marina, Katie. Jacqui will follow up.

CHILDRENS SOCIAL FORUM

We want people to respond to what things children should know about gender justice. Marina will send to the listserv.

Next week's agenda:

Finalizing the tent. what happens, how its set up Bathroom update Stipend application process and timeframe (application out end of this week) Structure for the gender justice blog
