U.S. Social Forum Writers Network
THANKSGIVING WEEK, 2009

This is a semi-monthly memo to the U.S. Social Forum Writers Network. Writers commit to helping spread the news about the USSF, which will be held in Detroit June 22-26, 2010. Writers try to submit at least one piece of work per month to a local or national newspaper, community or professional newsletter, internet blog, or other media source. Feel free to use the suggested “hooks” provided here to reach diverse audiences and to support the social movements behind the U.S. and World Social Forum process. Or let them inspire you to come up with your own ideas. Send your ideas for future USSF writers story “hooks” or links to pieces you’ve published to writers@ussf2010.org .

Another world is possible! We need YOU to help make it happen!

WE NEED YOUR HELP! Please distribute this call for participation (http://wiki.ussf2010.org/wiki/Call_for_Participation ). Or send people to the USSF website (www.ussf2010.org) and urge them to click “Get Involved.”

Suggested Story “Hooks” THANKSGIVING WEEK 2009

Giving Thanks Thanksgiving is a time for reflection on what we are grateful for. As our nation and world face times of uncertainty and change, I am grateful for those people who are creative enough to believe that “another world is possible” and who are courageous enough to work towards bringing that world into being. Many such people can be found in the leadership of the United States Social Forum, which will bring together tens of thousands of hopeful, courageous, and creative Americans motivated by the idea that “Another world is possible, and Another United States is Necessary!”

'“BLACK FRIDAY” Another United States is Necessary!' The economic downturn and increasing hardships for more Americans is forcing more people to think critically about our nation’s culture of hyper-consumerism. Many people may be re-thinking their post-Thanksgiving shopping tradition and seeking new ideas about life beyond the mall. The United States Social Forum will provide a space for people to come together and envision alternatives to a world driven by endless consumption.

WORLD LEADERS GATHER FOR Global Climate Meeting in Copenhagen December 7-18' The urgency of major actions to respond to climate change is becoming increasingly evident. But leaders of the world’s worst polluting countries are loath to take even minor steps to curb their emissions and to aid those countries most affected by the consequences of a warmer climate. Popular groups around the world are gathering in Copenhagen and in sites around the world to press leaders to finally take actions to protect the future of our planet. The U.S. Social Forum in Detroit will provide an opportunity for youth and other groups to come together to press our government to do more on this issue….
